An open letter to LGB Alliance re: their stance on GB News

Dear Ms Barker-Mawjee and Trustees,

My name is Liam Rondi. I am the gay man whose complaints and campaigning form part of the two Ofcom investigations that you and your organisation’s co-founder have publicly commented on. This campaign is not run by a law firm, a lobby group or a political party. It began with one gay man watching a broadcast, and it now carries the complaints of more than 15,000 members of the public. I write as the author of this letter, alongside the lesbian, gay and bisexual people co-signing below – the community your charity exists to serve.

On 11th August 2026, you described GB News as “championing the rights of lesbians, gay men and bisexuals”, and characterised the segments now under investigation as calling out the “homophobia of the straight TQ+ movement”. Your organisation’s co-founder, Malcolm Clark, also posted in support.

We are collectively struggling to reconcile that statement with the broadcasts themselves, with Ofcom’s previous findings, or with what GB News has already conceded to the regulator in writing.

Investigations have now been opened into two programmes. Here is what was actually said:

On 20th June 2026, contributor Syntyche Djunga (also known as ‘Based and Bougie’) told viewers that gay men are “statistically more prone” to sexually abusing the children they adopt. Asked for those statistics, she said she did not have them to hand, but that she had seen them and that it had been “proven time and time again”. No source pertaining to the claim has been produced since.

On 5th July 2026, guest Caroline Farrow told viewers that Pride is “not about gay rights” but about “celebrating every single sexuality that isn’t heterosexuality”, including within that description “bestiality and even minor-attracted people – you know, paedophiles”.

I and many others have watched these segments repeatedly and carefully. We are unable to find a single reference to the “homophobia of the straight TQ+ movement” you named. What we find instead are two instances of gay men being directly associated with the sexual abuse of children.

As an LGB charity, we presume you are aware that the accusation that gay men are a danger to children is the specific mechanism by which our rights have been attacked for over fifty years. It was the primary claim of Anita Bryant’s Save Our Children campaign in 1977, which overturned an anti-discrimination ordinance in Florida. It powered the 1978 Briggs Initiative, which sought to bar gay people from teaching in Californian schools. It was the animating logic of Section 28 in the UK, which for fifteen years made it impossible for a teacher to tell a frightened child that there was nothing wrong with them.

This claim has never rested on evidence, nor has it ever needed to. Its function has always been to make our presence around children unthinkable, and every legal protection we have won over the years has had to be won against it. Ofcom recognised as much in October 2025, when it noted how well-established this is as a prejudicial trope against homosexual people.

In January 2025, GB News presenter Josh Howie said that the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ people “includes paedos”. A record 71,582 members of the public complained. After an investigation spanning several months, Ofcom found the channel in breach of Rule 2.3 of the Broadcasting Code, concluding that the remark had the potential to be highly offensive. No sanction was imposed, as the regulator accepted an on-air apology as sufficient. In that apology, the presenter said “LGB” – he apologised, specifically, to the people your organisation claims to represent.

Most significantly, in its own submission to Ofcom, GB News stated that “the conflation or association of homosexuality with paedophilia is a harmful and homophobic trope.” That is the broadcaster’s own position, offered to the regulator in writing. A year later, two further segments doing precisely that are under investigation – and the charity that exists to defend gay, lesbian and bisexual people has described the channel responsible as “championing” our rights.

Over 15,000 people complained about these broadcasts. LGB Alliance’s only public intervention has been to commend the broadcaster. Thus, we put these four questions to you, and we ask for direct answers to each:

Does LGB Alliance consider the remarks described above to be homophobic? Yes or no?

Which specific remarks in these broadcasts do you consider to constitute the “championing” of the rights of lesbians, gay men and bisexuals?

On what basis do you attribute a claim about gay men and child sexual abuse to the “straight TQ+ movement”?

GB News has told the regulator that associating homosexuality with paedophilia is a harmful and homophobic trope. Does LGB Alliance agree with that assessment? If your organisation has previously said so publicly, we would be glad to be pointed to the statement.

Here is what we would like you to do:

• Answer these four questions publicly.

• Issue a statement on the content of the programmes themselves, rather than on the channel broadcasting them.

• Withdraw or substantiate the characterisation of these complaints as the work of a “straight TQ+ movement”.

LGB Alliance is a registered charity, number 1194148, whose stated objects are the promotion of equality for gay, lesbian and bisexual people and the protection of human rights. When a national broadcaster is under investigation for how it has spoken about gay men, the organisation claiming to represent gay men might reasonably be expected to say something about it.

To be perfectly clear – you are entitled to hold any position you wish, but you are not entitled to hold it in our name and call it representation.

We would welcome a substantive reply within 14 days of publication. This letter, and any response to it, will be published in whole or in part.

Yours sincerely,

Liam Rondi and the undersigned
