To the Known World and All Who Hold the Society Dear,
It has come to our attention that an individual calling themselves "Real SCA Knight" has been spreading online messages of bigotry and exclusion, purporting to speak from a position within our Order. We, as members of the Order of Chivalry, find it necessary to address this matter directly and unequivocally.
The Order of Chivalry stands upon the foundations of honor, courtesy, and nobility that have guided us since the Society's inception. According to Corpora, we are charged to be "models of chivalry, honor, courtesy, and prowess," and to demonstrate these virtues in all our interactions—both on and off the field, in person and online.
Let us be absolutely clear: bigotry in any form has no place within our Order or within the Society for Creative Anachronism. The views expressed by this individual do not represent the Order of Chivalry, nor do they align with the ideals we have sworn to uphold.
When swearing fealty, we pledge to behave in ways that: respect the Crown and populace, to practice hospitality according to our means and station, and to treat with courtesy and respect those of every degree, from royalty to the least of the populace. These promises are not conditional; they apply to every person who walks through our gates, regardless of their race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or any other aspect of their being.
The ancient concept of chivalry from which we draw inspiration was always meant to evolve and grow. In the Current Middle Ages that we create together, we have the opportunity—indeed, the responsibility—to embody the best interpretations of these virtues: a chivalry that protects the vulnerable, speaks for justice, and creates space for all to flourish.
We stand firmly in support of marginalized communities within our Society. This support is not merely a modern concession but a direct fulfillment of our core values:
The Society's governing documents remind us that "the SCA was founded on the principles of courtesy and honor" and that we must treat each person with respect. Corpora states that we aim to "encourage authenticity, creativity, and community-building within the context of pre-17th century cultures." Community-building requires that we make room for diverse voices and experiences.
To claim the mantle of Knighthood while spreading hatred is to fundamentally misunderstand what it means to be a Knight. Such behavior fails the tests of honor, courage, and franchise that are central to our Order.
We call upon all members of the Society to join us in recommitting to our shared values of courtesy and respect. Let us create a community where all are welcome, where the diversity of our participants strengthens our recreation of the Middle Ages, and where the nobility we aspire to is reflected in how we treat one another.
In service to the Dream,
[Members of the Order of Chivalry]
