El 16 de octubre, junto a la PAAC (Plataforma asamblearía de artistas de catalunya), más de mil trabajadorxs culturales del estado español firmamos una carta de solidaridad con el pueblo palestino.

Han pasado más de tres semanas desde que, a pesar de una demanda de alto al fuego humanitario por parte de Naciones Unidas –firmada también por los dirigentes de nuestro país–, Israel continúa aplicando el castigo colectivo sobre la población civil, matando a civiles, periodistas y personal médico, destruyendo casas, hospitales, escuelas y bloqueando la entrada de agua, combustible, alimentos y medicación necesarias para la vida en Gaza, todo ello violando el derecho internacional y con total impunidad. En estos días, Israel ha cometido 3 de los 5 actos que perfila la Convención sobre Genocidio de las Naciones Unidas.

Como trabajadorxs del arte, entendemos bien el poder del lenguaje y las imágenes. Hace semanas que observamos con indignación cómo los medios de comunicación son cómplices del genocidio perpretado por Israel, insensibilizando a la opinión pública y silenciando la información que nos llega directamente a través de redes sociales por parte de periodistas independientes que están arriesgando sus vidas para mantenernos informadxs. Tanto en Europa como en Estados Unidos también estamos viendo censura, criminalización e intimidación contra lxs que se atreven a alzar la voz, ejerciendo su derecho a la libertad de expresión.

Desde que escribimos nuestra primera carta hemos sido testigos del silencio atronador de la gran mayoría de instituciones culturales de este país –tanto públicas como privadas–, en relación a estos hechos, un silencio que nos resulta inaceptable.

Hacemos un llamamiento a todxs aquellxs que dirigen y trabajan en instituciones culturales, desde una clara convicción de que las instituciones no pertenecen a quienes las dirigen ni a quienes las financian, sino a todxs las que trabajamos y hacemos uso de ellas, desde los públicos hasta lxs que exponemos y formamos parte de sus colecciones. Es todo el tejido cultural el que conforma las instituciones culturales, y quien las dirige debe escuchar, dialogar y hacerse eco de las comunidades que las sustentan.

Rechazamos la violencia contra toda población civil y pedimos el fin de la ocupación y el apartheid. Nos solidarizamos con el pueblo palestino y exigimos a nuestras instituciones culturales que se posicionen con nosotrxs de forma clara y pongan sus recursos a disposición de una firme petición de alto el fuego inmediato en Gaza, la entrada de ayuda humanitaria y boicot, desinversiones y sanciones (BDS) contra Israel.

On October 16th, together with the PAAC (Catalan Artists’ Assembly Platform), over one thousand Spanish cultural workers signed an open letter of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

It’s been more than three weeks since, despite a UN demand for a humanitarian ceasefire –also signed by Spain –, Israel continues to impose its collective punishment. The killing of civilians, journalists, and medical staff has not stopped, but worsened, as has the bombing of houses, schools and hospitals. The blockade on the entry of necessary water, fuel, food, and medication to the Gaza strip continues, all in violation of international law and with impunity. Israel has in the last days committed 3 of the 5 acts outlined in the United Nations Genocide Convention.

As art workers, we understand the power that language and images hold. For weeks we have been watching with indignation how the media are complicit in the genocide perpetrated by Israel. They have been attempting to desensitize public opinion and silence the information that reaches us directly through social networks thanks to the independent journalists who are risking their lives to keep us informed. Both In Europe and in the United States, we are seeing the censorship, criminalization, and intimidation of those who dare to speak up, exercising their right to freedom of expression.

Since we wrote our first letter, we have witnessed the deafening silence of the vast majority of cultural institutions in this country –both public and private– in relation to these events, a silence we find unacceptable.

We call on cultural institutions and those running them, convinced that these do not belong to those who manage or fund them, but to those making use of them, including the audience, the artists exhibiting or those present in their collections. It is the whole cultural fabric that makes up cultural institutions, and whoever runs them has an obligation to listen, dialogue with, and echo the communities that sustain them.

We reject violence against all civilians and call for an end to occupation and apartheid. We stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people. We call on our cultural institutions to join us in taking a stand, and make their resources available to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the entry of humanitarian aid, and the application of boycott, divestment and sanctions on the state of Israel.
