Include Boris Johnson as 3rd Candidate on Final Ballot

To Sir Graham Brady,

This letter is on behalf of Conservative Party Members and voters who strongly disagree with Boris Johnson's removal.

We have several questions for the Conservative Party. We would like to know why the Conservative Party failed to consult Conservative Members on their plan to remove the democratically-elected Prime Minister Boris Johnson from office. We can only assume that our opinion on this matter means nothing to the Conservatives who ousted the Prime Minister.

In a recent email from the Tory Chairman, he mentioned the following:

"We both know that members are the lifeblood of our party. You make everything possible - from winning elections to governing the country."

We wholeheartedly agree with his sentiments. Therefore, we are amazed that, considering how crucial we are to the party, we were not consulted on the very serious decision of whether Boris Johnson should stay or go.

This was extremely sudden and has left many of us in shock. Hundreds of thousands of Tory members and voters feel betrayed and dismayed by this development. It has become clear that the actions of the Tory MPs who resigned do not coincide with the general feeling among Conservative members and supporters.

The anger and outrage are overwhelming. The supporters of Boris Johnson who vote Tory surpass that of his critics. Furthermore, the resignations are viewed as treacherous and cowardly actions which have certainly not been received well by the public. A recent poll by The Conservative Post which exclusively targetted Tory Party members found that 93% were in favour of Boris staying which is a rather stunning contrast with what the Tory MPs and media are promoting.

This poll appears to be the only accurate representation of the ordinary Tory voter, the lifeblood as the Chairman states. Nowhere in the media are our views being represented, nor on the Conservative Home website, which is deeply disappointing.

With reports that Senior Tories are claiming it was a mistake to let Boris go, and Tory donors withholding funds unless Boris is reinstated, not to mention mass outrage up and down the country and the very real risk of losing the Red Wall, the 1922 Committee must take our views seriously and take steps to rectify this mistake so that irreversible consequences do not befall this country.

We voted for Boris Johnson as Prime Minister and we chose him instead of Jeremy Hunt. When we did this, we expected him to finish his term until the next general election. We did not, at any point, expect that he would be ousted by his own party. We acknowledge there have been bumps in the road, but we were not under any illusions since Brexit that it would be easy. We acknowledge the efforts and achievements of the Prime Minister, both nationally and internationally, and we firmly feel that he should remain where he is.

We are not sure why 59 Tories who have lost confidence in the Prime Minister should be prioritised over the voters and members. It makes a mockery of our democracy and it makes a mockery of us.

We do not believe the Conservative Party has realised the damage it has done to itself and to our democracy with the actions it has taken.

Therefore, we are requesting that Boris Johnson appears as a third candidate on the final ballot and that the members have the final say, as should have been the case in the first instance. The snap decision to oust Boris on grounds that we consider unjust and undemocratic is unacceptable and in true democratic fashion, the people should cast the final judgement.

The Prime Minister said in his resignation speech that it is the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that he steps down. We have no doubt that this is true.

But is it the will of the members and the voters, the very people who elected these parliamentarians to represent them, and who elected Boris Johnson as Prime Minister? From what we can see, the answer is no. There is, however, only one way to find out.

Therefore, we reiterate our request that the Tory Party adheres to the will of the people they represent and the will of the members who put their faith in them. We feel we must remind the Conservative Party of this as their actions of late have been unjust and undemocratic, a feeling shared by many across the country.

We look forward to your replies to our questions, as well as your response to our proposal, and we sincerely hope that the wishes and values of the members you hold in high regard are respected and adhered to.

Kind regards

Sarah Antoinette
