Make CPR & First Aid part of the British curriculum.

Dear All Decision Makers

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express a strong belief held by myself and many others within Yorkshire and Humber, the critical need for CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and First Aid training to be included as a mandatory component of our school curriculums.

Every year, sudden cardiac arrests, accidents, and emergencies claim thousands of lives, many of which could be prevented by the immediate actions of a bystander trained in basic life-saving techniques. Unfortunately, a significant portion of our population remains unprepared to act in these emergencies due to a lack of training.

Schools are the ideal setting to ensure that every individual, starting from a young age, gains the knowledge and skills to provide aid in moments that could mean the difference between life and death. By integrating CPR and First Aid into the curriculum, we equip an entire generation with the capability to respond confidently to medical emergencies. This is not just a skill; it is a public health necessity. A prepared population can reduce fatalities in situations such as heart attacks, strokes, choking incidents, and severe injuries.

Training in these skills builds confidence in young people, empowering them to act when others may freeze. It promotes a culture of readiness and community responsibility, ensuring that individuals do not feel helpless in emergency situations. In many cases, timely CPR and First Aid can stabilise a person until professional medical assistance arrives. This window of time is often the most critical. By educating young people in these techniques, we improve not only individual preparedness but also the overall health outcomes in our communities.

Many health organisations, including the British Heart Foundation and Red Cross, have championed the inclusion of CPR and First Aid training in schools. As policy makers, it is crucial to support these efforts and ensure that our educational policies reflect these health priorities.

I urge you to take the necessary steps to introduce legislation or support initiatives that make CPR and First Aid training a compulsory part of the school curriculum across the United Kingdom. While the initial investment in resources and training may seem significant, the long-term benefits far outweigh the costs. It is an investment in the safety, well-being, and future of our children and our society. I am confident that with your support we can set an example for others by placing the health and safety of our citizens at the forefront of educational reform.

I would be happy to discuss this proposal further or connect you with organisations that are ready to assist with implementing such a program. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. I look forward to your response and the potential progress we can make together for the betterment of our communities' future.

Many Thanks,

Anna Calvert
