Nashville’s Business Community Supports Bipartisan Gun Reform Legislation in 2023

Dear Governor Bill Lee, Lt. Gov. Randy McNally, and Speaker Cameron Sexton,

Business leaders in Nashville, Tennessee are devastated by the recent tragic events at the Covenant School where six Nashvillians lost their lives to gun violence. As of today, there have been 146 total mass shootings in the US in 2023. We stand in solidarity with our community, employees, customers and neighbors in rebuilding trust and safety. We do not accept these horrific statistics and take an action-oriented approach to making our community safer.

As leaders, business operators, employers, employees, and/or advertisers in Tennessee’s business community, we demand gun safety legislation in the 2023 session. Deferring legislation is dangerous for the safety of our community. We’ve widely discussed bipartisan solutions like Extreme Risk Protection Orders. Nineteen states have already adopted Extreme Risk Laws and have shown that they prevent suicides as well as mass shootings. You have the opportunity to help lead the nation in decreasing gun related deaths, the number one cause of death in children in the US today.

Extreme Risk Protection Orders (also known as red flag laws) are a proven way to prevent gun violence. These laws allow family members or law enforcement to petition for a court order to temporarily remove firearms from individuals who pose a danger to themselves or others. This could prevent tragedies before they occur and save countless lives.

Beyond Extreme Risk legislation, we support other bipartisan solutions including but not limited to Safe Storage Laws and Background Check legislation. We are not in support of measures that put more guns in schools, especially in the hands of civilians. Tactics that put more guns in schools have been shown to decrease safety.

The time to act is now. We urge you to take action on gun reform in Tennessee during the current session, and we support 2023 legislation for Extreme Risk measures as a first step towards preventing gun violence.

Update 15 April 2023

The business community petition is growing!

Hey y’all - thanks for sharing, even on a weekend. I see many familiar faces as signers to our letter. Some of you I very much look up to and know if you and your businesses even though you may not know me.

Join me in sending a copy of this petition to your rep on Monday morning at 9am.

Until then, keep signing and sharing with business community folks you know.

Thanks y’all.

Update 11 April 2023

Please take some time to share with a colleague

Hey y’all

Wow! We have 14 signatures! If you want to help get this petition noticed by our representatives, please take some time to share with a few colleagues and other business owners today. We could get to 100 easily if we all sent to 8 or so friends who would gladly sign. Thank you!

Update 15 April 2023

Nashville’s business community petition is growing!

Hey y’all, thanks for sharing- even on a weekend. It’s great to see our list grow. I recognize several of the names. It makes me emotional because some of the folks who have signed are people I very much look up to but might not know me. I’m so happy you were able to see the petition, back it, and are willing to share it.

We are all sending this to our representatives at 9am Monday morning. Until then, keep sharing with business community folks you know.

Thank you!

Update 12 April 2023

We are getting traction!

Hey y’all,

First off, thank you so much for signing our letter. This isn’t the work of a political org. It’s an effort of a few parents, people in the business community and you, signing and sharing in your spare time.

We thought a few small business owners might sign, but it’s so heartwarming to see so many different pockets of the Nashville business community here. I love seeing doctors, teachers, stay at home parents, entertainers, employees, freelancers, architects, and more :).

Since this effort is completely grassroots, we need a lot of help sharing it. Would you kindly send this to your colleagues, friends, parent groups, coworkers and/or share this with your social network?

Our next goal is 500 signatures. It feels lofty but I think we could do it if we all share the letter with our network!

Thank you so much.

Update 13 April 2023

The game plan

When this hits around 200, I’m going to start sending to legislators, and I wanted to encourage you to do that too. You can find the legislator for your district here: https://www.capitol.tn.gov/legislators/

Or send to all of them. Keep signing and sharing with your network. We are doing great at spreading the word together.

Update 14 April 2023

Keep up the pressure

We are almost at 200 signatures! Keep signing and sharing and we will be there in no time. Every signature makes a difference.

If you know someone who owns a large corporation, please reach out to them with this petition. We have tons of small business owners. Let’s get more owners of large businesses involved too.

We are sending this petition out to legislators on Monday morning at 9:00 am. Please join us in sending this with you own message on why you signed to legislators Monday morning.

This past Tuesday, Gov. Bill Lee voiced support for Extreme Risk measures and Universal Background checks. That is good news. However, no legislation has passed as of yet. This year’s session is almost over. We deserve to be listened to by our representatives. This petition builds a case that Nashville and TN business owners will not stand for gun violence. Let’s be loud about it today as we continue to grieve with our community.

There are other groups building petitions for the business community. I’ll keep you updated on the status of the ones I’m able to share as they become available. Thank you!

Update 16 April 2023

Share with your reps tomorrow

Hello all. Apologies for the double update yesterday.

We did the heavy work of signing and sharing. If you know anyone else who might like to sign, be sure to send this link to them today! Tomorrow, it’s time to share with legislators.

Please share the petition link with your representative, or better yet, every representative tomorrow morning at 9:00am.

Title the email “Business Community Gun Reform Petition”

Tell your rep what the petition asks for: To pass Extreme Risk, background check, and safe storage legislation in this 2023 session.

Then, tell them why you signed.

Finally, share the link in the email.

Thank you all so much!

Update 17 April 2023

Time to send to legislators

Hello all,

Here's instructions for sharing with your rep! Feel free to follow these or write your own.

  1. Please send an email titled “Business Community Gun Reform Petition” - This is the most important request. I think reps will take a look at this closer if they see they have multiple emails about it.

  2. Tell your rep what the petition asks for: To pass Extreme Risk, background check, and safe storage legislation in this 2023 session.

  3. Tell them why you signed.

  4. Finally, share the link in the email.

If you don't have time for all that, just do step 1 and 4. Sending an email with the link is just fine because it gets more eyes on this.

I've spent last night and this morning agonizing over what to say in an email to my reps that will persuade them to hear us out. Is there something I could write that would help them say yes to passing bipartisan gun control legislation this session?

And actually, I don't think we should worry about having all the right words right now. I think it's more important for our reps to see the email, see that it's live and see that business owners care about and want gun reform to provide a safe environment for their employees, customers and neighbors.

If y'all would like to contact me about this petition, feel free to reach out on Twitter. My handle is: @hey_kelley.

Thanks y'all!

Update 18 April 2023

Did anyone get a response from Legislators?

It was a busy day yesterday. Did anyone get a response from the legislator? Let me know at @hey_kelley if you did. I did not. We will see how today goes.

Thanks y’all!

Update 19 April 2023

Open for petition update: Don’t give up!

Hey y’all,

I’ve written to Rep. McNally, Rep. Sexton, Sen. Haile, Rep. Lambereth, and Gov. Lee. I’ve gotten no response so far. If you haven’t emailed legislators about this petition yet, you still can! It’s not too late. I’m going to talk to Voices For A Safer TN and see if there are other ways we can share our voices to lawmakers.

If you’d like to connect about this petition or if you have ideas on how to get it in front of lawmakers, reach out to me at @hey_kelley over on Twitter. Thank you!

Update 20 April 2023

Another update to our business petition

Hey y’all!

A few updates:

-Please send this petition to your representatives! You can even forward them this email if that’s easier.

Tell them what the petition is:

We are Nashville and Tennessee business owners, operators, employees and community members who support bipartisan hun reform measures in our community in this 2023 legislative session.

Please share everywhere you can: social media, emails, etc.

Monitor for responses from your reps.

-Gov. Bill Lee is pushing for measures protecting our community from hun violence. That’s great.

-State Senator Jeff Yarbro (District 21) is bringing SB 1029 up to a vote on the se rate floor today. It would enact Extreme Risk Protection Orders. In support of this? Please let your reps know asap.

-Easy way to call your reps:

I used that link yesterday to call a few lawmakers and voice my opinion.

Thank you for sharing!

Update 24 April 2023

Sign and share until the special session

Hey y’all. Great news: On Friday, Gov. Bill Lee called a special session dedicated to gun reform measures. I believe that makes Tennessee the first state in US history to call a special session on passing gun reform legislation. That’s truly incredible. Having a special session gives us a few weeks to pass around this petition and get more signatures. Since my updates are crowding the petition, my plan is to reformat the document and all the signatures into a PDF to print out and deliver to Gov. Lee before the special session. Please share with a colleague or fellow business owner today. Thank you so much for standing up for our community and voicing your support for bipartisan gun reform legislation. Feel free to contact me on Twitter at @hey_kelley with thoughts or questions.

Update 15 May 2023

Nashville's business petition on gun reform will be live until the special session

Hey y'all. I'll keep it short. Our Nashville Business Community gun reform petition has surpassed 300 signatures. I think a great goal is to get to 500 signatures by the Special Session on August 21st. I plan to format the letter and signatures, print them off, and deliver them to Gov. Lee's office before then.

Thank you again for sharing this petition. If you would like to help deliver the petition to Gov. Lee's office, feel free to reach out to me before August on Twitter: @hey_kelley.

Update 26 June 2023

Looking for 12 more signatures (gun reform petition)

Hey y'all!

I haven't posted an update in a while, and a lot has happened. Our petition has grown larger than I ever thought it would. Continued thanks for signing and sharing.

A note to anyone signing on mobile: SCROLL DOWN PAST THESE UPDATES to sign.

Here's my ask: communities I haven't been able to reach with my personal network are: companies in Chambers of Commerce in Sumner County, Davidson, Williamson, Wilson, or any of the surrounding counties. Rotary clubs, Veterans groups (especially business focused groups) in Tennessee, Entrepreneur groups and non-profits, and large business CEO type groups. We are looking for around 12 more signatures. If you know anyone who comes to mind who might want to sign in or especially in charge of these groups, please send them the petition.

Some quick facts:

-Gov. Bill Lee still hasn't confirmed the August 21st proposed special session.

-I've tried talking to my reps outside of Nashville with no response.

-I still plan to print off this petition and reformat it so it doesn't include any of these updates, just the original petition and our signatures. I still plan to deliver it to our reps in early August.

Thanks so much. If you need to contact me, you can at kelleyboothe at gmail dot com.

Update 17 August 2023

We are printing this petition to deliver to the capitol

Hello!

You may have signed the Nashville gun reform petition yesterday or way back on April 11th when we published it. Either way, thank you so much for sharing your voice. This petition echos many of the other calls to action we've seen in the past few months. With the special session just days away, it's important people in leadership positions know where Nashville's business community stands on community safety. We are two signatures away from 300, so if you know any person who might really be interested in signing our petition supporting ERPOs, universal background checks, or safe storage measures, please share with them today. I'd love to have a full 300 signatures, but I need help! Please share with just one person if you can.

I will deliver a printed version of this petition with the signatures (and without the updates) to the capitol before the special session.

Thank you so much.
