Open letter to the BACP requesting a public statement regarding the attacks on healthcare provision in Gaza

Dear BACP,

As registered members, we urge the BACP to issue a public statement regarding the current situation affecting hospitals in Gaza. Our ethical framework emphasises respecting human rights and alleviating suffering. As mental health professionals, we believe we have a responsibility to advocate for the protection of healthcare facilities, which are protected under international humanitarian law (IHL). Irrespective of any political affiliation, healthcare services must be safeguarded for all civilians impacted by conflict.

The BACP's ethical principles, particularly those of beneficence and non-maleficence, compel us to promote wellbeing and avoid harm. In light of reports from international bodies, including the United Nations, highlighting the devastation on Gaza's healthcare system, it is crucial that we uphold these principles on a broader scale.

We respectfully request that the BACP:

-Reaffirm our profession's commitment to human rights and dignity

-Emphasise the importance of protecting healthcare facilities in conflict zones

-Encourage diplomatic efforts to ensure the safety of medical personnel and patients

By taking this stance, the BACP would demonstrate leadership in upholding our ethical standards and contribute to the global dialogue on this critical issue.

Sincerely,

Melanie Cross
