Open Letter to the Creative Industries: More support for menopausal writers

To those who work with writers,

We are writers who are currently navigating the menopause, or aware that at some point in our lives we might navigate the menopause, or we’ve experienced the menopause and wish that we could have had this conversation.

We love our work, but the physical and cognitive challenges of the menopause sit uncomfortably alongside the rigid structures, timescales, and stresses of the creative industries.

Too often, writers feel forced to hide their symptoms at the cost of their health and creativity.

We are asking for a shift in culture.

We are asking for:

Adaptable deadlines and meeting schedules for when our symptoms are acute.

Recognition that brain fog, aphasia, and the other menopausal symptoms which get in the way of our work are health symptoms (or acquired neuro-divergence) not a lack of talent or professionalism.

An environment where we can talk about the menopause and our journey through it without fear of professional bias.

The creative industry thrives on diverse voices. By supporting menopausal writers, you help to ensure that we can continue to contribute our experience and expertise to the cultural landscape.

How you can help:

Detailed resource packs for writers and those who support them are available to download HERE. We encourage you to use these tools to help make the industry a more inclusive place to work.

We’re brilliant writers.

Ask us what support we need so that we can continue to do our best work.

Signed,
