Unlike others who claim to speak for all trans men, we claim only to represent those who sign this letter. No one voice can represent all of us; like any group, we are varied. Some trans men are deeply concerned with equity and committed to solidarity in the face of oppression. Some of us are regrettably not, and this letter stands in opposition to them, and to their pseudoscientific depiction of trans women that serves only to divide our community.
Rather than countering point by point each invalid, dehumanizing argument, we have chosen to assert what we believe, and what we will continue to believe. Signatories to this letter agree to the following points:
Our struggles may not always look alike. We may not always agree. We may see different problems and different solutions. But ultimately, we agree that unless we work to uplift everyone we are not interested in equity, only in changing who is benefiting from inequality, and that to uplift everyone we must look to those who are most marginalized. To that end, we want to explicitly commit to solidarity with trans women of color, disabled trans women, trans women who are unhoused, and other groups too often excluded from conversations about queer rights and queer liberation.
*signatories are people comfortable referring to themselves as trans men or transmasculine. As in all else, we believe that they are who they say they are.
Hello folks!
Thank you to those of you who pointed out that we should have directly named the transmisogyny of the letter we're responding to; I originally thought it was unnecessary to use that specific word but have been convinced that I should have included it to make it very clear that what we're opposing is a textbook example of the specific harm trans women are targeted for.
In addition, we've gotten our first couple of transphobic responses, so skimming the list of signatures isn't quite as empowering as it would be without them. I can't take them down, but there's a cleaned-up version of the letter here:
docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vRMYqwFYubKYSs...
I'm going to request this letter be removed from OpenEarth, but it might take a while. You can sign it on this site as long as it stays up, but you can also use this google form to sign: https://forms.gle/8pUQUAbyDsnPUrzJ8
Thanks to everyone for our strong show of support! As I write this update, we're nearing 500 signatures and only a couple are transmisogynistic.
One more update - the full, correct version of the letter, with all signatures, is at tinyurl.com/trans-men-speak-letter
We're still accepting signatures!
