To The University of Glasgow & Chancellors Fund,
This is an open letter in support of the application to expand the university curriculum and facilities with:
(1) A two-day workshop on how to use a 16mm Bolex Camera and hand-develop 16mm photo-chemical film
(2) A screening of the work produced, with an introduction and talk on analogue filmmaking for those that can’t attend the workshops
(3) The purchase of a 16mm Bolex Camera for students to use
Twenty-nine of the ninety films screened at Cannes in 2025 were shot on photo-chemical film. Without access to analogue film equipment, or formal instruction in its use, students risk falling behind the graduates of other institutions where such training is embedded within the curriculum.
Providing students with both the opportunity to learn and to experiment with analogue cameras would significantly enrich our educational experience. It would prepare us for professional practice beyond university and aid our understanding of the rich history of the craft.
