Urge University College Dublin to sign the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative

Dear members of the University Management Team at University College Dublin,

We, students, graduates and staff of University College Dublin (UCD) and members of the wider community, ask UCD to publicly endorse the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative.

The first reason is that UCD has already shown it takes sustainability seriously. UCD ranks first in Ireland and 47th globally for sustainability (QS, 2026). Endorsing the Initiative would match that record with a public commitment on the biggest cause of the climate crisis, which is fossil fuels.

The second reason is that other universities are already acting. University College Cork and Trinity College Dublin have endorsed the Initiative. UCD is well placed to join them rather than follow later.

The Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative is a global campaign for a treaty to stop the expansion of coal, oil and gas, phase out existing production fairly, and support a shift to clean energy. It complements the Paris Agreement by addressing fossil fuels directly. Endorsing it is a public statement of support. It would show students, staff, government and industry that UCD is willing to lead, and it fits with commitments to sustainable campus practices, renewable energy and teaching climate science and solutions across courses.

So we ask you, as the people who make this decision, to endorse the Initiative. It would strengthen UCD’s reputation and give students and staff something to be proud of.

Thank you for your consideration and your reply.
