I am writing as a concerned constituent regarding the Data Bill currently progressing through Parliament, and in particular, the newly proposed amendment that would require all state-held data to revert individuals’ sex to that assigned at birth.

This amendment is deeply troubling. It would strip thousands of UK citizens of their right to privacy, forcibly out people against their will, and erase their legal recognition. It targets a vulnerable minority and would effectively define many people out of legal existence, with serious consequences for safety, dignity, and access to services.

The amendment would require agencies such as the DVLA and Passport Office to purge and replace correct, up-to-date gender markers with inaccurate data. Not only is this a gross invasion of privacy, it is a discriminatory move that puts individuals at risk, both in the UK and while travelling internationally.

This is not a neutral administrative change, it is a targeted rollback of human rights. I urge you to oppose this amendment and to speak out against any legislation that undermines the privacy, equality, and safety of UK citizens.

A person needs their ID for every day life, what happens when a trans person goes to a club? A bar? A shop to buy something as simple as a bottle of wine? What happens to trans people applying for work, and the employer doesn’t wish to employ trans people? Or for housing, and the landlord feels the same?

This is allowing for a trans person to be left wide open to be publicly humiliated, and it’s another step to edge trans people out of public life. It’s completely dehumanising and in 2025, after years of governments being on side with LGBT people, I am completely shocked that this is even up for a debate.
