Greetings to the government of the United States of America.
Please follow your values.
At this year’s Munich security conference, the Vice President (President JD Vance) spoke about European countries and their values of democracy, when you talked about how European nations are not recognizing and following “Democracy” correctly . Well, it might be true that the European countries might not be following the values of “Democracy” and “Freedom of Speech and Neutrality”. But, I believe that the United States of America is not following its values! If you are also aware of that, well, thank you! But, it seems like your voice is not being heard by the majority of the people involved in the government of the United States, and I hope one day that these problems will be fixed.
One example of this behavior is Western Media, particularly US media. Over the past 40 years, we have seen a dramatic shift in the global economy. Entering the “Asian Century” As powers like India, ASEAN, and China have grown significantly. But, I see that Western media is refusing to recognize this in their media. You see, many Western people have never heard about the “Asian Century”, even though it is most likely true. This is proof that the US is not following its value of “Neutrality”. Another proof of this is how the US exclaims China’s arguments in the South China sea! While China did have a lot of disputes in the region, they are not the only ones that are disputing the region when other southeast asian countries also argue for the region, which is proof that US media is NOT neutral.
A second example of the United States breaking its values is in the US Tiktok ban when the Biden Administration tried banning the viral social media app Tiktok. Although the Trump Administration upheld the ban, the current administration still requires the app to sell 50% of its stocks to US companies or consumers, gaining more control of the media platform. This may be against the US core values because the platform “Tik Tok”, being the most viral social media platform that is not from the United States, cannot be as easily controlled as a Silicon Valley application such as Youtube or Instagram. The US banning it or getting more stocks will mean that the platform will be controlled by the US government more than before. This limits freedom of speech because they can control the algorithm to show fewer videos criticizing the United States.
In addition to breaking this value. There is also a piece of evidence of the United States breaking their values of “Capitalism” and “Working hard to get more”, which is the United States' sanctions towards China:
You see, the United States, 20 years ago, was superior in technology, economy, currency, and ideas. But lately, the United States has gotten more competition. And what happens when they cannot compete with their Chinese counterparts? Sanctions. While Chinese companies innovate and take up more market share, the US government scrambles to sanction these companies or even ask other nations to do so. This is not fair because the Chinese people had worked hard to achieve the market share that they have, or else how would they? So when Chinese companies such as Huawei, Deepseek, and ZTE are too good, the US bans them. It’s mostly not about security concerns, but more about eliminating the competition. To be fair, China is not the only country that the US targeted, the US also targeted countries like the USSR, Japan, and many more. Which means that China is not the only victim of US sanctions.
Then, we have privacy concerns. The United States claims to be very “concerned” about privacy for its citizens. Using this claim to sanction Chinese services which they claim are a “national security risk” All doing this while there is proof that the United States is also collecting data from its users. A way to prove this is Google. The company has sent millions of pieces of data to US intelligence agencies such as the CIA and the NSA. Other Silicon Valley companies such as Meta, Microsoft, Apple, and OpenAI have also sent data to the United States. The United States uses this data to monitor their citizens so that they can predict the actions they will be doing next. What is even crazier is that while all of this is happening, the US continues to criticize China and some other countries for breaking human rights, and not respecting citizen’s privacy, even when the United States continues to collect data! In addition, some Americans think that China’s level of surveillance is “dystopian” while their government is also monitoring them, further proving that US media is not neutral, but Pro-Western.
Another concern I have with the US government is the CIA-backed coups, which the US did quite often during the Cold War with the USSR. These coups are bold and uncivilized operations from the United States that target leaders that the US government does not like and take them down by giving benefits to protesters to protest against the government, giving them weapons, and even assassinating their target! This is not a way the US government can show their value of “peace”, and it shows how desperate the US can be to stop countries from spreading their ideas.
A final example of the United States breaking its value of “peace” is the number of wars the country has fought since World War 2. The United States has engaged in the most wars since WW2, including the Ukraine War, the Gaza War, and civil wars. The country also tried to eliminate countries that can compete with its military, such as sanctioning Iran for developing nuclear weapons while having the most nuclear weapons in the world.
Of course, there are also solutions to many of these problems:
A way that the nation can improve the neutrality and unfair sanctions of the United States is to simply recognize that other countries are advancing faster to become stronger competitors, and start working harder to remain dominant in the market. This is good for the overall industry because it means that there is more competition which means that companies and corporations are pushed to make more innovative products. I also think that the current method the United States is using has also proven to be ineffective. For example, the sanctions towards Huawei have been ineffective because the company that is sanctioned, Huawei, had been pushed to make their parts to rely less on US services. This is bad for the US because their companies are losing money from losing one of their biggest customers, and the sanctions also pushed Huawei to create a 100% China-made phone (Huawei Mate 70 series), which is exactly the opposite of what the United States wants to get from the sanction. Because of this, trying a new method to stay dominant would be better for the United States and the overall industry. Remember, blowing out other people’s candles does not make yours shine brighter. Instead, it forces and pushes others to make theirs shine even brighter than before.
Then, we can also fix the problems of violence and coups by adapting to the changing world. To give an example, we can see that the concept of the emerging superpower, China, is to make a multipolar world. To adapt to this, the United States can at least make itself a pole in this multipolar world. Instead of attempting to stop others from innovating and improving and attempts failing, you can see that the United States can embrace this multipolar world and make itself a pole so that the United States is still relevant to the future economy. Although I understand that the best interest of the United States is to slow down the development of other countries and to make itself dominant, following that interest is going to be very unrealistic as powers such as China have caught up to the United States despite sanctions. I think the United States would much rather be still relevant to the future economy than if they get caught up by their competitors, and I think this method is a way to do that.
A final way the US can follow its values better than before is by being more transparent about user privacy. We all know that the government is interested in collecting data, whether that is for security or malicious purposes, please be more transparent about the millions of pieces of data you collect every day. It’s okay to not be completely transparent, but we would like to know what data is collected from us! Do not claim to citizens that you are not collecting any sort of data, because you are! So please, please commit to being more transparent about the way you handle your citizen’s data.
In conclusion, I hope that the United States recognizes these problems and tries to address them using the solutions that were mentioned in the letter. Your enthusiasm and consideration of my ideas will be strongly appreciated. Such a change in a country with so much influence can help the global industry innovate faster and make the world a better place.
Thank you, and have a great day.
